We are delighted to announce that Ventana Andina 2010, the Washington area's second annual festival of Andean cinema, will take place Saturday-Sunday, December 4-5, as part of the inaugural season of the Artisphere, Arlington County's exciting new "third space" cultural center just three blocks from the Metro in Rosslyn,Virginia.  Once again, we are presenting three curated screenings of films by and from the Andes, many of which are North American premieres.  Below is the schedule of film screenings:

Saturday, December 4 – 2:30 p.m.
Cuidar la Pachamama (Caring for the Earth Mother)
Ukuku (Perú/2009/20 min/Quechua & Spanish with English subtitles) The Ukuku is a mythological Andean being – half-bear, half-human – whose sworn duty is to climb to the snow-capped peaks and retrieve the ice that many Andean people consider sacred. This short tells the story of an Ukuku who climbs to the high peaks and does not find ice. Directed by Gastón Vizcarra Olivares.
La Oroya: Full Metal Air (Aire Metálico) (Perú/2008/28 min/Spanish with English subtitles) Residents of the Andean city of La Oroya, which has been declared one of the world's ten most polluted cities, struggle with the effects of lead poisoning caused by refining operations. Directed by Alvaro and Diego E. Sarmiento
Choropampa: The Price of Gold (Perú/2002/85 min/Spanish with English subtitles) A devastating mercury spill transforms a quiet village in the Peruvian Andes into a hotbed of civil resistance, but powerful interest conspire to thwart the villagers at every turn. Directed by Ernesto Cabellos Damián and Stephanie Boyd.

A las montañas (To the Mountains)
Requecho, mil años despues (Requecho, A Thousand Years Later) (Perú/2009/50 min/Spanish and Aymara with English subtitles) A candid look at the Los Uros people, who live on artificial islands of totora reed in Lake Titicaca. While many families have moved to “touristic” islands closer to the city of Puno, others refuse to abandon their ancestral places. Directed by Humberto Saco.
El Regalo de la Pachamama (The Gift of the Earth Mother) (Bolivia/2008 /104 min/Spanish and Quechua with English subtitles)  A young boy joins his father in the salt caravan across Bolivia’s Salar de Urunyi, delivering salt to the people of the sierra. Directed by Toshifumi Matsushita.
Airamppo, La Semilla Que Tiñé (Airamppo: The Seed That Gives Color) (Bolivia and Perú/2008/78 min/Spanish & Quechua with English subtitles) This experimental film tells the fantastic story of Don Silverio Moro, the great and invisible mayor of the town of Totora, a young native girl named Sabina, and Chicho, a young hippie plunged into hallucinations from the excessive intake of chicha de jora. Directed by Alexander Muñoz Ramirez and Miguel Valverde Botello.

Sunday, December 5 – 2:30 p.m.
Sucesos en la vida del pueblo (Events in the Life of the People)
Don Melcho, amigo o enemigo (Don Melcho: Friend or Enemy)(Perú/2009/91 min/Spanish and Quechua with English and Spanish subtitles) The true story of an enigmatic and fearless local leader from the highlands of Huancavelica, who in the 1980s became known both as a bandit and as a benefactor of the poor campesinos. Directed by Arnaldo Soriano Vásquez.
Marcados por el destino (Marked by Fate) (Perú/2009/ /Spanish and Quechua with English and Spanish subtitles) This compelling family drama from the altiplano region in the south of Perú portrays the attempts of three orphans to overcome the horrors of their childhood. Directed by Oscar Gonzalez.


Tickets are $10 per evening, $25 for a three-day pass. They will be available at the door, and  online (link to come soon!)
